Air Conditioner usage tips during Coronavirus Pandemic

In the unprecedented time of Covid-19 Outbreak, WHO keeps rolling out new updates on the coronavirus disease. The recent reports by WHO say Covid-19 is an Airborne disease

What it means is, the virus carried through respiratory droplets is prone to an airborne transmission when suspended for a long time and distances. WHO accedes to the possibility of the spread of coronavirus in Indoor spaces.

Reading this, the first thing that comes to our mind is the Air Conditioning system which continuously circulates the cool air in a given space.

Hence, it is important to understand the usage of AC during Covid-19 and follow precautionary guidelines that protect you from the spread of the coronavirus.

In this blog, we will discuss some of the protective measures and government-issued guidelines necessary to be followed for using the air conditioning system in a room.

But before we dive in, let’s understand the facts responsible for coronavirus due to room AC.

Does Coronavirus Spread by Room AC?

Staying without AC in the time of summers is difficult. That too, in the hot and humid climate of India makes us feel restless.

So, the only thing we need to understand is does Corona spread by the operating Air Conditioning?

Well, it can be risky if we don’t take relevant measures. The good news is it can be avoided with an appropriate ventilation system while the AC is running, just to ensure that we are breathing the cool and quality air.

When the Air conditioner is on, the air circulates continuously to vent out cool air and soak the humidity in the confined space. As per the study, researchers say the respiratory droplets exhaled by a person dry down and become the carrier when the cool air flows into the room. However, the direction of the AC airflow is a concern for coronavirus transmission.

When the AC runs in a crowded indoor space of people with a limited or no ventilation system, the chances of getting infected becomes high due to the rapid airflow.

Having said that, the chances of coronavirus spread due to the usage of AC in a room are very less compared to AC in outdoor places like shops, malls, restaurants, offices. The reason is, these places have any number of visitors on a daily basis. Whereas, in a room, you know the people you are surrounded with.

Government Issues Guidelines for AC usage in the time of Covid-19

On the basis of the study by ISHRAE (Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioner Engineers) the government has documented general guidelines for operating ACs at home, workplaces, and other facilities.

To control the spread of highly infectious Coronavirus, we need to adopt these measures following the idea of air conditioning with ventilation mentioned as under:

  • Ensure that you operate the AC at the best temperature range of 24 °C to 30 °C. This way it maintains an optimum balance between humidity level and dry air in the space.

  • Use exhaust fans adjacent to space along with the room Air Conditioning system.

  • You can keep the windows slightly open to ensure quality air ventilation.

  • Ensure your AC filters are clean and help the indoor and outdoor units with timely maintenance tasks. Seek the help of a professional service provider.

  • Open the doors and windows for fresh air circulation and ventilate the room when AC is not in use.

General Tips to Keep Yourself Safe While Using AC

As everyone is staying home during these uncertain times, here are some of the tips to keep yourself safe and sound:

  • As all the family members including you are having more time at home, it is advisable to reset the thermostat to make the room temperature more comfortable for the entire day.

  • Use an upgraded HVAC filter system to restrict airborne contaminants through it and ensure clean and quality air circulation.

  • Check the humidity levels at your place and set the AC to the ideal temperature to maintain a humidity range between 40-70%, where the virus is least active.

  • Take the necessary service and maintenance steps at regular time intervals for the AC units to function efficiently.

  • Understand how your system functions and allow it to rest and not let it work hard out of its capacity to enjoy the smooth performance in the long run.

Initially I was concerned about using my home air conditioner due to covid. However with the time passing by and more clarity coming across the pandemic, I believe it is safe to use the air conditioner at least in private places.
